Things to be thankful for…

As the holidays approach and everyone (myself included) gets all wrapped up in family, food, and festivities, I think it’s really important to remind ourselves what we already have before we embark on something as challenging as a job search.

When my husband and I bought our townhouse as newlyweds, we were giddy with excitement going up and down the stairs. What an exciting new addition to have a second floor! It was like a palace compared to our tiny one bedroom apartment.

Within less than a year, I was pregnant and in 2010, our beautiful baby girl was here. In 2011, my son joined us. Amazing! In less than three years, we went from having nothing to do with our spare room to shoving things in every crack, crevice, and closet. I tell this story not to lament my “spatially challenged” home, but to share my own struggles with feeling grateful. It gets challenging at times to count my blessings when I’m tripping over my husband in the bathroom or staring at the gagillion toys my children have strewn about my living room for the fifth time that day.

However, I am truly blessed. I have happy, healthy children, a warm and safe home, and a wonderful husband. PLUS, I love what I do. I was lucky enough to discover my passion for resume writing after my daughter came in to the world. Following the birth of my son, I left my full time “big girl corporate” job to start my business full time…and I’ve never looked back.

As Thanksgiving is upon us, I have a lot to be thankful for. I’m thankful for my awesome clients who teach me every day about their interesting careers and give me the opportunity to help them land their dream jobs and improve their lives and those of their families.

If you or someone you know is looking for a fresh start or feels like they are stuck in a job they’re not happy with, it’s a good idea to start focusing on the good. While I won’t be writing a self-help book anytime soon and get a little nervous when people get toooo touchy feely, I think there is some validity in positive thinking. Reflect on the things that make you happy, and you’re likely to attract positive things into your life. Do something every day that gets you on the path you dream of, and you’re more likely to reach your goal.
