One of the most challenging things for any professional is maintaining a work/life balance. As a mom and a wife, I’m constantly reminded of all the things I could be doing when I choose to do something else. When my daughter is napping, I could be vacuuming but I’m writing a resume instead. When my son is jumping on me and screaming lalala, I could be answering an email but I’m bonding with my kids instead. What’s the end result of all this? Something, always something, isn’t getting done.
Recently, I read a quickie list (from Forbes I think) with secrets for being more productive. I was pleasantly surprised at how many of them I follow…okay, so I probably should block Facebook while I work but it’s just so darn addictive! No matter how productive we are or strive to be, it essentially boils down to choice. Everyone makes them. My kids are 1 and 2, so to me it’s a no-brainer. Kids/family first, work second, and then somewhere down the line my house gets clean.
What does this have to do with resume writing, you ask? Not a ton, I’ll admit BUT it’s an important but of goal setting for every job seeker. Be honest with yourself about what your priorities are. I don’t recommend telling a potential employer that your job is not important as your family, but it’s not a bad idea to make sure the demands of the position you’re seeking are in line with your expectations. Make sure the company’s culture and values resonate with your own, and try to get a sense for the overall environment from corporate blogs, sites like glassdoor, and a company name search on LinkedIn.
